Ministers' announcement of a review of the Student visa program and package of measures to assist the international education sector – 16 December 2010
The Minister for Immigration and Citizenship, the Hon Chris Bowen MP, and the Minister for Tertiary Education, Senator Chris Evans, announced today a strategic review of the student visa program. The review will be headed by the Hon Michael Knight AO, and report to the government in mid 2011.
The ministers also announced a package of measures to ease the pressure on the international education sector. These include:
* Assessment Level 4 Vocational Education and Training (subclass 572) visa applicants can now undertake a package of Certificate level courses to meet requirements for the grant of a visa.
* Prepaid boarding fees can be counted towards the students' cost of living requirements.
* An in-depth statistical publication for Student visas in January 2011.
* From April 2011, Assessment Levels will be improved for a number countries by visa subclass.
